GRETZKY TO RETURN: Wayne Gretzky told Los Angeles Kings owner BruceMcNall he'll return for his 14th season, the Los Angeles Times said.Gretzky, who had hinted at retirement after the Kings lost to theMontreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup final last season, had beenhaving discussions with McNall throughout the summer. NFL MOVES: The New England Patriots traded Jon Vaughn, the team'sleading rusher last year, to Seattle for an undisclosed draft choiceand also claimed three players off waivers. The Patriots, who as theNFL's worst team in 1992 got first shot at any waived players thisyear, picked up linebacker Keith McCants, offensive lineman JohnEarle and linebacker Jason Carthen. . . . Quarterback Jeff George,who refused to report to training camp with the Indianapolis Coltsand accumulated $144,000 in fines, was placed on the team's activeroster. . . . The Denver Broncos released running back Greg Lewis,who rushed for 644 yards the last two seasons, to make room foroffensive tackle Gary Zimmerman, who will play in tomorrow night'spreseason finale at Phoenix. YANKS MAY TRAIN IN TAMPA: The New York Yankees have outlined a planto move their spring training camp from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa in1996. Yankees general partner Joe Molloy presented the finalizedplan that would have the Tampa Sports Authority construct a10,000-seat stadium and two practice fields. The stadium also wouldbe the home of a minor league team beginning in 1995. Molloy said heexpects an answer on the proposal within 60 days. "I don't thinkFort Lauderdale really wanted us back any more now that the FloridaMarlins are there," Molloy said. MOVIE IN HARRISBURG: The pennant-winning Cleveland Indians arecoming to Harrisburg, Pa. But only in the movies. Parts of "MajorLeague 2" will be filmed at RiverSide Stadium from Sept. 18-25. Thesequel, which will also be shot in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, willagain feature Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen and Corbin Bernsen.RiverSide Stadium is the home of the Montreal Expos' Class AAaffiliate in the Eastern League. PENN STATE RECEIVER OUT: Penn State wide receiver Tisen Thomasinjured his left knee during a scrimmage, and probably will miss theentire football season. Thomas, who had been expected to be theLions' featured wide receiver, sat out the 1991 season after heinjured his right knee. RECYCLING CUPS: The University of Tennessee and Eastman ChemicalCo. are teaming up to recycle plastic cups left behind at sportsevents. ROUGHRIDERS GET HELP: The Saskatchewan government won't let theCFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders fold without a fight. EconomicDevelopment Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said the government willconsider all options to help the team, if sagging attendance and a $2million debt force it out of business or out of the province. TYSON APPEAL: Defense attorney Alan Dershowitz is sure of MikeTyson's innocence. He's just not sure it can be proven in the statewhere the former heavyweight champion is serving a six-year sentencefor rape. "I am not confident of anything in Indiana, but I amconfident that eventually Tyson's rape conviction will beoverturned," Dershowitz told Los Angeles radio station KMPC.Dershowitz and co-counsels planned to appeal Tyson's 1992 convictionto the Indiana Supreme Court today. WILANDER IN U.S. OPEN: Mats Wilander, a former U.S. Open tennischampion in the midst of a comeback attempt, was given the finalwild-card entry in the men's field of this year's tournament, whichbegins Monday. PURDUE PLAYER SUSPENDED: Running back Galen Morrow has beensuspended from Purdue's football team after being arrested on a theftcharge. Morrow is suspected of stealing a vacuum cleaner from auniversity hotel.
